The Reasons To Normalize In Terms Of Numbers Of Citations As An Indicator Of Local Impact Were Two-Fold

Abstract

The density of the network is more than twice as high in the sciences when compared with the social sciences in terms of the average cell values. All matrices are extremely sparse: I added to the row with unique journal-journal relations (in italics) the percentage of cells with a value as compared with the total number of cells of the matrix, that is, the number of possible citation relations among journals in the set. This percentage is a bit higher for the social sciences because the networks are more spread.
