Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused immediate changes in the food retailing environment. On March 24, 2020, the government of India announced a 21-day national lockdown that extended till 31 May, 2020. This lockdown has left the urban food markets with severe difficulty and with many restrictions on doing business. Also taking the advantage of the restrictions imposed during the lockdown, the grocery shop owners are charging for the essential items as per their own will. According to the recent report by Mckinsey and Co., there is 39% of growth of grocery shopping from kirana stores during lockdown. It also states post the pandemic there could be an 8% increase in shoppers. This research paper will show the influence of lockdown on the buying activities of customers related to grocery shopping and will also find the problems faced by the consumers in purchasing essential items during this pandemic outbreak. This paper will show all the good, bad and ugly aspects of shopping groceries in lockdown.
